Water reflections

Another advantage of being in Cancun (other then warmth, sunshine and fun) was all the water! I took many water reflection photos while I was there. I have several shots that I like that may become new art quilts. This is one of them.

Water photo

Back from a great week in Cancun - which I liked very much. The colors in the water and sky and pools are breath-taking. This photo of the bottom of a pool offers all kinds if interesting possibilities. The wobbly circle and the grid lines are change dramatically through 4 feet of water!

Spirals

This is a manipulated photo of my spiral hose lying on the front deck (with it's shadow, of course!) Working with your own photos opens up possiblities for creating unique imagery.

I am signing off for a few days while I go to Cancun to get warm. I hope to find lots of photo opportunities while I am there.

Shadow and texture

Another shadow image of a metal sculpture take yesterday at the Wright Museum of Art at Beloit College. Not only do I like the strong black shapes but the texture on the wall behind.

Shadows

Today I went with some friends to see the Regina Benson exhibit at the Wright Musuem of Art at Beloit College, WI. The exhibit was beautiful and intruiging - how she acheives the patterns and surfaces in her work. More to come on this. One of the pieces consists of several panels hung next to one another and the images below show the shadows that were cast on the wall below the piece.

Happy Valentine's Day

I had a lovely day with MY valentine - it turns out we got the same card for each other - both funny and very touching! I like having these occasions (no matter how commerical they might have gotten) to have an extra reason to celebrate something good in our lives.

More of the wonderful heads from Steelheart. I like the intimacy that is suggested by the shadow. Also the calmness of each face.

Head shots

Cleaning up photo files I come across these shots I took last summer at a funky place called Steelheart. I love the juxtaposition of the various heads in the birdbaths!

Stalagmites/stalagtites

The ice that has formed by water washing over this boulder has formed stalagmites and stalagtities. There is enough ice that it has taken on a bluish tint. It makes me think of glaciers!

Zig Zag Shadow

Sometimes you come across a really wonderful  pattern in an unexpected place.

Juggling

I feel like I have been juggling a lot of balls of late! This photo of some of the balls that reside on the mantle seems a good way to capture an image for today.

Labyrinth cloth

I have been working with the labyrinth image that I showed a few weeks ago. In this sample the Chartres labyrinth image is vat dyed in red over a mottled red and teal linen. There is a small amount of discharge halo around the edges but not enough! Then I overprinted with turquoise the fern leaf. Not sure I am liking this at all but hoping it will lead to something I do like, soooon!

Leaf Bowl

I have a large openwork black metal bowl that sits on the dining room table. I love this bowl - the shape, the pattern, the shadows that it throws on the tabletop. Periodically, I take new pictures of it when I see it in a new way. Here is a detail from the bowl.

Observations About LIfe - A Journals Presentation

Yersterday I did a presentation for First Congregational Church in Crystal Lake, IL. lt was called Observations About Life: Journals, Sketchbooks, Diaries, Blogs and More...  It was a well attended event and I had lots of samples both in a Powerpoint presentation and also real items. Below is one of the journals that I showed.

A wonderful story came out of event - a woman whose mother is 99 (and who had written travel journals thorughout her earlier life) reads them to her now. It is something that her Mom remembers well even though her present day memory is not so good anymore. I like knowing that I may get to "read/hear" my journals again down the road!

What do you think?

I think this section of broken ice and moving water creates an image of a person's body. What do you think?

Ice and water reflections

This is the Rock River overflowed on to the surrouding area. The broken ice on the river piles up against the bank and then the smooth ice fills the field. I like the way these trees become segmented by the ice and water.

Eagles on the MIssissippi

This weekend, we went to LeClaire, IA for Eagle Days. We followed the suggested route making several stops along the way to see the bald eagles in trees and flying out above the open water looking for food. Also got to see take photos of interesting ice formations along the way. The water has been high and many places have water and ice where there normally woudln't be any. I like the ice on the river rock below because the icicles have frozen into teardrop shapes.
See http://dancingbirdstudio.wordpress.com/ for more about Darcy's adventures with eagles yesterday!
