Off to Europe

We are going to be gone for a few weeks to Prague, Budapest, a river cruise to Amsterdam, then on to Antwerp and Brussels.  Should be a wonderful trip and I hope to capture a ton of new imagery - all the river time should find me with the camera capturing color and pattern at all times of the day and night!

Art Specifier Jeff Mann

Art Specifier has an interview with Jeff Mann today. I find his work intriguing - using old car parts and metal objects to create sculptural work that feels very textile like. Go check out the article!

For Lucy

My friend of 50 plus years, Lucy, died yesterday after a year long struggle with assorted problems.  Here are a few pictures of us in happy times - our trip on the Silk Road in 2006 - celebrating during the year of our 60th birthdays. She and Barry and I went to college togheter and remained friends all these years.

Failed trial

I had this vision of shaping this piece of digially printed cloth with Fossshape.  But it is a total failure. I have to think about what I thought was going to happen versus what DID happen. I always think that the failed pieces end up leading you somewhere new and more exciting....but not always. Sometimes it is just a dud idea.

Color Ways

Going back to my reflection photos from Venice to build a set of prints for upcoming exhibit.  I think this one works well - color, pattern, movement, light.  One down, 8 to go.

Kaleidoscope pictures again (yes again)

I have been working with these images again to try and decide whether to print them for a display or not.  I think I shot too many! Every time I go through them I get bogged down  looking at too many and can't decide on what group to use.  Maybe it's time to start over.

Slow Muse

I read this blog regularly. Today's post about the artists Bonnard and PiIcasso and especially the quote about Bonnard's capturing the effernescence of pleasure in his work strikes a cord with me.  Please link to Deborah Barlow's Slow Muse and enjoy reading her post.

Wood shapes

Another woodpile from the Alps hike.  This photo has not been worked on at all but I think the hsapes and overall pattern will lead to some new work.   Many homes in the villages we walked through had the whole side of the house lined in woodpiles. Some piles worked their way around windows, gates or flower boxes but all were so neatly done that they became an intereresting feature all on their own.

Back to work

Today I am off to Peaces Gallery in Barrington, IL to hang some of my work. And then on to the studio to make progress on new work!  This photo is of some of the woodpiles I passed while hiking in the Alps - I think they will move the Tree Ring pattern series along.  I like the pattern as well as the different shapes intersecting with one another.  I have more photos to look at and explore.

Back from the Grand Traverse Hike through the Alps

I am back from my long hike. It was a terrific trip with wonderful sights, great food and lots of hiking. Some of the hiking was scary, some beautiful, all of it challenging.  I have lots of photos to sort through, some may lead to new work! Here is the photo of the Alpen Glow that I caught at sunrise one morning while staying in the mountain hut at 11,000 feet. I wasn't sleeping well and had already been up to see the moon rise, the stars so clear at this altitude and then the sunrise.  It was a wonderful moment. Note hte almost full moon high in the blue sky!

Fog and cold

Our hike at 7000 feet today was our "warm up " hike. warm up is what we needed to do when we were done as it was very rainy, foggy and cool.  But also very beuatiful with the azaleas and other flowers blooming high on the mountainside.  Trying to hike on rough rock and take pictures was not my best thing so I have very few to choose from.

Off to the mountaintop

I arrived in Chamonix in the French Alps on Sunday and made the decision to go up to the top of the mountains as soon as possible as the weather was predcitied to get bad by that evening. And that has been true. It has rained, been foggy , cloudy and cool since Sunday night. It was quite the experience to be on top of the Alps looking at rock, snow and ice in all directions. The cable car goes up in 2 segments, the second segmnet is so steep - almost vertical by the end.  More pictures below.

Off to hike the Grand Traverse

On Saturday I leave to hike through the Alps  - Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France and Italy. The route is called the Grand Traverse and goes through these 5 countries as you make your way from west to east.  I may not be blogging from there but will be taking lots of new photos to play iwht with when I get back.

Grass and sky

A low to the ground photo of grass with raindrops against the dark clouded sky.  If we are going to have storms everyday at least some interesting imagery is coming along iwht it!
