Cool Colors

Just looking at bamboo feels cooling and restful.

Road sign

Someone has had a heyday with this sign and in the process created some great textures!

It always pays to have your camera at the ready!

You just never know when a photo opportunity will present itself. Larry and I were having a drink of wine at his kitchen table and voila, a wonderful shadow image appears on his shirtfront. Thank you, Larry, for providing the canvas!

Contrast

The last of the photos I will post from the trip last week. I like the various contrasts in this photo-the contrast in color, in texture and in shape. I also like the gracefulness of hte long leaves.

Bamboo and glass forest

The Chihuly glass exhibit at Cheekwood Botanical garden included a walk through a bamboo "forest" interspersed with these wonderful red glass poles. The contrast between teh greens of the babmboo and the reds in the glass was stunning.

Falling water

This is a detail of a metal serrated columnal sculpture at Cheekwood Botanical Garden in Nashville, Water runs silently down all 4 sides of the sculpture sliding over the serrated edges. Somehow this creates rapidly changing patterns in the flowing water. Depending on how the light hits it there is dimension to the water as well. It is lovely and soothing and a photo does not do it justice.

Intertwined

While I was in Nashville last week I went to Cheekwood Botanical Gardens to see the Chihuly glass exhibit ( more of those images later). The grounds of this old mansion are beautiful and most of the trees and plantings are very mature. This vine growing up a pergola must be  very old because the vines are more like tree trunks then anything else. I am looking up into it and it amazing to see how intertwined and graceful all these 6 inch "vines" are.

Patternmakers

Something is chewing little patterns into the these leaves. I am fascinated that they are not just "holes" but these precise little geometric shapes. They look a bit like hieroglyphics.

Rain, rain go away

We had lots of rain while travelling last week-this photo was taken through the windshield while being pelted. I love the abstractness of it and that it is black and white.

Feather dusters

I am back from our very hot and humid road trip through southern Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee. Among the interesting plants I saw was this feather duster like plant which I have sinced learned is a mimosa plant. I had never seen this plant before. Most trees were covered in blossoms and they were everywhere!

Color opposites

All of a sudden my coleus plants are growing like crazy and this chratreuse and red violet leaved one is bright and intense. How many different ways the leaves combine the 2 colors togehter in differing patterns.

I am off for a road trip for 10 days and may not be blogging - all depends on where we end up staying! But I will be finding lots of photo opportunites along the way so that will be lots of fun.

Sample of black organza discharged with thiox and then overprinted with vat dye using  fern leaves. I think this direction has possiblities for a new piece of work. I like the subtle shades and overlaps of the grays.

Still in light mode

I still seem to be looking at images with light. This is photo of pavement with dots of light reflected on to it. I like all the levels that are created.

Overlapping light

Light coming in from the high windows on the west send patterns across other windows and walls.

Light bright

Going through the photos from the architectural boat tour last Monday, I look again at this photo of the new Trump Tower in Chicago. It is glass and because it was rainy and dark it has a somewhat ominous appearance here. But when the light is bright is almost disappears into the sky.

Let there be green

This has it all - different greens, different textures, and shadows!
