Shots from 4th Friday

 I finally got these off my camera. I wanted to take some more shots of the gallery when people were there but it didn't happen. In spite of horrible weather we had a pretty good turnout. And it was good for me to see all the work up at one time. Sometimes I forget about the pieces from the past and seeing them again and being happy with them was a boost to the spirit.

Reflections, Venice, var. 25

I think it is done. This piece is over 9 feet long. I had a vision of it rippling down the wall but I have not been able to get the effect I want as yet with any devices that I have tried. Iwould like to make that  happen because at 9 feet is probably too big for most spaces. An answer will come.

Reflections, Venice, var. 25

I just completed 2 variations using this photo from Venice. The photo is digitally printed on a heavy cotton canvas. Both over 9 feet long and 28 inches wide.One is  fused and quite stiff  and has drawn and painted lines as well as stitching. The second one has all stitching and is on a softer batting. It is an interesting study to see how different they appear.  I will shoot some details to show in next post. I wanted to see if I could create a piece that felt more like a painting then a textile and I think it partially succeeded.

Upcoming exhibition - Water Colors

Coming too soon is my solo exhibit at The Starline Gallery. I will be showing about 18 art quilts and art cloth pieces from my water reflection series. Some of these pieces have not been gathered together in quite some time. I just received Reflections, Venice, var. 2 back from its sojourn at the U. S. Embassy in Vientiane, Laos.  More information to come as the I get closer to the date. Now it's time to clean studio, make labels, finish poster, get work ready to hang and ......

Red and more red

This beautiful bowl was a Christmas present. It is red lacquer on the inside and and it was reflecting sunlight and patterns when the sun hit it yesterday. I think that it something that I could shoot quite often and always see something new.

Art Quilts at International Quilt Festival in Houston

Here are some photos from the SAQA Seasonal Palette exhibit that was at Houston a week ago. The show will be traveling to Cincinnati, Long Beach a a few other venues over the next 18 months, I hope to go see it in Cincinnati next April. My piece is the water reflection piece at the far right in the first photo. 38 artists were asked to make pieces for the show - each of us were given a particular season and color collection to work from. Another exhibit at Houston was A Sense of Scale. Very large pieces were interspersed with groupings of small pieces. This exhibit will also be traveling to other venues and also has a catalog available from SAQA.com. My piece in this exhibit was Mingled Waters - the very large piece shown in photo below.

Water patterns

Today we went on a architecture boat tour on the Chicago river. I took a lot of photos of the reflection of buildings in the water. I am not sure how this one ended up as this kind of pattern but I think they it is very cool!

Reflections, Glass Walls

I am thinking about adding to my series on Reflections, Glass Walls, so I have been looking at photos of skyscrapers in Chicago that I took a couple of years ago. I had forgotten how interesting the reflected patterns can be!

500 Art Quilts: An Inspiring Collection of Contemporary Work

500 Art Quilts: An Inspiring Collection of Contemporary Work has just been published by Lark Books. Kathy Bresnahan juried the work which showcases the work of 363 contemporary quilters. Martha Sielman, executive director of Studio Art Quilt Associates, describes the book as "an incredible feast for the eyes ... this book is a must-have for every art lover, quilter, and fiber enthusiast." My art quilt, Reflections, Variation 7 is on page 154. The book is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other books sites. There are some incredible peices in the book.
