Summer's End Exhibit

I am off to the Arboretum at the University of Madison today to install my solo exhibit, Summer's End. The majority of the exhibit will be of my shaped leaf pieces (see a detail below). Wish me luck with the installation process!

Beautiful water

While zooming aorund on the Segway O got to take some water reflection photos. I would love to capture the luminosity and brightness of this shot in one of my art quilts.

Look Ma, no hands!

We went for a Segway ride along the Lake Michigan shoreline and it was so much fun. The movement just becomes so intuitive quickly and you can speed along amd see lots of things. Faster then walking, easier to see the wrold around you then a bike.

Uigher hats

Continuing on my Chinese textile reminisces these are Uigher men's hats at an open market. Another dizzying display of color and texture.

More Chinese textiles

More textiles from my China trip. These wool felted rugs were inside of a very shabby yurt out near Heavenly Lake in Western China. Once you went through the door it was a completely different world - colorful, warm, entrancing.

Paper cuts

Having pulled oiut the Chinese textiles (see a few of the previous posts) I am leaning toward Chinese images! When I was in China a few years ago I collected many papercuts - this one is probably no more than 6 inches tall - so the detail is pretty amazing.

Fragmented leaves

I have started a new piece in my fragmented leaves series based on these beetle chewed linden leaves. They are very beautiful when you see them close up.

Prairie find

A driveby find - how can this shed lean so far over and still have the roof remain horizontal to the ground?

The bobsled run

While in Park City we go to see the bobsled run from the 2002 Olympics. I try multiple times to catch the the bobsled as it goes by and each time this is what I get because it is moving so fast and by the time I see it coming round the bend it is past me. So try to imagine a 4 man bobsled right here!

Virga

Virga is rain that doesn't reach the ground. From the plane it looks graceful and beautiful.

It's true, I can't resist the cloud photos. Here is another one from one of our hikes in the mountains. It jsut feels like you could reach up and touch it.

Pattern upon pattern

Flying just gives me such an opportunity to see the world in new ways. Flying over Iowa and Nebraska there are miles upon miles of fields that are planted and harvested in interesting patterns. Here is one example. It reminds me of many quilts I have seen!

Clouds

We arrived back from Park City, Utah this morning after out last hop in the little plane from western Iowa. I just love looking at and flying through the clouds as we go. How can something be so amorphous and yet throw a black shadow on the ground? Take on so many different shapes, move so easily? They are fascinating.
